Recommends a review of Boracay's increasing tourism capacity

Previous Secretay Roy Cimatu of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) advised the agency to assess and fast-track handling of the consideration of increasing the tourism capacity of Boracay Island.

Cimatu stated that the island resort is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, and DENR must endorse a new tourism capacity limit during the Boracay Inter-Agency Task Force (BIATF) culmination.

The Department of Tourism, Aklan Provincial Government, and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Boracay appealed beforehand for an amended tourism capacity for Boracay.

In 2018, President Rodrigo Duterte tasked Cimatu to close Boracay for six months to undergo environmental rehabilitation. Duterte named Boracay a cesspool because of several ecological concerns reported on the island.

Currently, the DENR only allows a daily limit of 19,215 tourists on the island.
